Children’s Dentistry

Kids Dentistry

Our primary aim is always to ensure that your child is at ease and completely comfortable before we proceed. At Dr.Sushma Dental, our friendly staff will ensure that your children are as comfortable and happy as possible. Our treatment rooms have been designed to impart a calming ambience. Everything about it is intended to help your child relax in what may be an unfamiliar environment for them.

We encourage you to get your child into the habit of having regular dental check-ups. Not only will this keep their teeth healthy and allow us to identify problems before they develop, but it gets your child accustomed to visiting the dental practice. Prevention is always preferable to treatment. As your child grows, our dental team will advise them on dental care and emphasise the importance of caring for their teeth.

For those who are very nervous, we offer sedation, so your little one doesn’t suffer needlessly. Our goal is to provide the best care in the best environment as we help you and your child have positive dental experiences on each visit.

Oral Hygiene

It is never too early to make brushing and flossing your child’s habit as part of everyday life…just as washing hands and taking a shower. It is true that children mimic their parents, so it can be easily adopted if parents brush and floss with their children, together at home. Even at your dentist appointment, bring your child with you and let him/her watch you have a cleaning.

  • Use a small, soft toothbrush and brush gently in circular motions along the gum line, twice daily. Especially help them clean the inside surfaces of teeth and back of the front teeth. Let children choose their own toothbrush to make taking care of their teeth fun.
  • Use a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste. Try to keep the children from swallowing the toothpaste.
  • Help children with flossing daily. The earlier a child learns to floss, the better, as flossing removes the plaque which brushing cannot remove.

Fissure Sealants

Applying fissure sealants on the grooves of back teeth is a safe, painless, and quick way to prevent tooth decay. As it is usually clear or white in colour, it is unnoticeable. Once applied, fissure sealants can last for many years and they make brushing easier, as the tooth surface becomes smoother. We check at each appointment and seal again if they are worn. Please remember though, fissure sealants are just one of the preventions, so it is still important to brush and floss every day.

Pulp Therapy

Pulp therapy is a procedure in which the dentist will maintain the tooth so it is not lost. The two most common forms of pulp therapy are pulpotomy and pulpectomy. A pulpotomy removes the diseased pulp within the crown of the tooth. The pulp root remains healthy and unaffected.

Once the diseased portion has been removed an agent is placed in the tooth to prevent bacteria growth and infection and calm the nerve of the tooth. Finally, a crown is placed on the tooth. The crown strengthens the tooth and minimizes the risk of future fractures. Pulpoptomy can be used as treatment on the baby or permanent teeth.

Pulpectomy is necessary when the entire pulp is involved from the crown to the root canals of the tooth. The diseased pulp is completely removed from the tooth. The canals are then cleansed, disinfected and packed with a re-absorbable material. If the tooth is a permanent tooth, a non-reabsorbable material is used. The final step is to place a crown over the tooth to provide strength and support to the tooth.

Orthodontic Evaluation

Like anything else, early detection of any orthodontic problems (or even potential problems) can be beneficial to your child in the long run. Here at Dr.Sushma Dental, we make it a normal part of dental cleanings and exams to evaluate any potential orthodontic problems in our young patients.

Mouthguards

As much as we would like our kids to enjoy sports, it is important to “play it safe” to avoid serious injuries. Wearing a mouthguard when playing sports can prevent dental injuries. We recommend mouthguards to people of all ages and abilities.

Mouthguards are a fantastic option for those that need to provide protection to their teeth and mouth. A customised mouthguard provides the best protection available and can help to prevent damage, which could result in dental treatment.

Mouthguards are the first point of protection for preventing teeth damage. Wearing a mouth guard can also prevent brain and neck damage, as it absorbs the shock. At Dr.Sushma Dental we recommend making a custom-made mouthguard for your child for the best fit and comfort as their mouth goes through changes with growing teeth. Please talk to us about any questions you might have about mouthguards.

Dental X-Ray Safety in Children

Dr. Sushma Dental uses the most advanced digital dental X-ray technology to minimize the amount of radiation exposure during your child’s dental x-rays. We use the World's First Nano Technology-CNT Tube with low radiation exposure. When weighing the cost vs benefit, always try to minimize your child’s exposure to x-rays as much as you can but be aware there likely will be times where x-rays are necessary and beneficial. We recommend getting a dental X-ray at the age of 2 or 3 to help ensure that your child's teeth and jaw are properly aligned. The first X-rays are simply picturing the upper and lower front teeth. This is meant to familiarize your child with the X-ray process. When the baby teeth at the back start touching each other, we move on to the regular X-ray.
